Companionship care

What is companionship care?

Loneliness can affect how someone eats, sleeps and feels. Companionship care means a friendly, regular visitor who spends time with your parent doing the things they enjoy, from a cup of tea and a chat to a trip to the shops or a favourite café.

It is usually lighter than personal care. The focus is on company and a helping hand, rather than help with washing or dressing, although many agencies can add personal care later if it is needed.

Because the same carer tends to visit, it can also be a gentle first step into home care, and a way for someone to keep an eye on how your parent is doing.

What carers can help with

Every care plan is different. These are the things carers most often help with.

  • Chat, share a cuppa and simply keep your parent company
  • Go with them on walks, to the shops or to social groups
  • Help with hobbies, puzzles, reading or looking through photos
  • Help them keep in touch with family by phone or video call
  • Prepare a light meal or snack together
  • Do small jobs around the home, like tidying or watering plants
  • Notice if something seems wrong and let you know

Is it right for you?

Companionship care can suit you if

  • Your parent lives alone and often feels lonely
  • They have stopped going out as much as they used to
  • They are mostly independent but lack confidence out and about
  • You live far away and want someone to call in regularly
  • They are not ready for personal care but could use some support

How it’s arranged

What usually happens once an agency gets in touch.

01

First steps

The agency will visit to get to know your parent, their interests and what they would like from the visits. This helps them match a carer with a similar outlook or shared interests.

02

Planning the care

They will agree a simple care plan with visit times and activities. Ask whether your parent can meet the companion first, as a good personal fit matters most for this type of care.

03

Once care begins

Once visits start, check in with your parent about how they are getting on. The agency will review the plan, and can add more help if needs change.

Costs and funding

What does companionship care cost?

Companionship care is usually charged by the hour, and the price depends on how often and how long the visits are and where you live. Our cost guide explains what affects the price, and the calculator helps you estimate it. It may be paid for from savings, or by the council after a needs and financial assessment if your parent is eligible.

Questions families ask

Is companionship care the same as a befriending service?

Not quite. Companionship care is arranged through a care agency with trained care workers, and can include light help at home as well as company.

Can the companion take my parent out?

Often, yes. Ask the agency how outings work, including transport and any travel costs.

Does companionship care include personal care?

Usually not at first, but many agencies can add help with washing and dressing later if your parent needs it.

Will it be the same person each visit?

Agencies try to send the same companion so a real friendship can grow. Ask how they cover holidays and sickness.
