24 hour care at home

What is 24 hour care at home?

24 hour care gives round-the-clock support at home. It is often provided by a team of carers working in shifts, so there is always someone awake and ready to help. Some agencies provide it with two live-in carers who share the day and night between them.

It is different from live-in care. A single live-in carer lives in the home and is there through the day, but needs a proper break and a night’s sleep. With 24 hour care, someone is awake and on duty at all times, including through the night.

This makes it suitable for people who need help often at night, who are at high risk of falls, or whose health needs mean they should never be left without help close by.

What carers can help with

Every care plan is different. These are the things carers most often help with.

  • Stay awake and alert through the night, as well as the day
  • Help with washing, dressing, eating and using the toilet
  • Help your parent change position and move safely
  • Prompt or help with medicines, as agreed in the care plan
  • Respond quickly if your parent wakes, falls or becomes unwell
  • Hand over carefully at each shift change so nothing is missed
  • Keep detailed notes and report changes to the agency and family

How it’s arranged

What usually happens once an agency gets in touch.

01

First steps

The agency will assess how much help your parent needs by day and night, and advise whether a shift team or two live-in carers would work best. They will also check the home has what carers need.

02

Planning the care

They will write a care plan and build a small team. Ask how they keep the same carers, how handovers work, and whether you can meet the team before care starts.

03

Once care begins

Once care begins, the agency should check in often and review the plan. If needs change, the mix of carers and shifts can be adjusted.

Costs and funding

What does 24 hour care at home cost?

24 hour care usually costs more than a single live-in carer because more carers are involved. Our cost guide explains what affects the price, and the calculator helps you estimate it. Care may be paid for from savings, by the council after a needs and financial assessment, or by the NHS in some cases, such as NHS Continuing Healthcare for complex health needs.

Questions families ask

What is the difference between 24 hour care and live-in care?

A live-in carer lives in the home but needs breaks and a full night’s sleep. With 24 hour care, someone is awake and on duty at all times, usually a team working in shifts.

How many carers are involved?

It varies. It might be a small team working shifts, or two live-in carers sharing days and nights. The agency will explain their approach.

Do the carers need a bedroom?

Shift carers usually do not sleep at the home, but live-in carers do. Ask the agency what space they will need.

Is 24 hour care an alternative to a nursing home?

For some people it is. It depends on their health needs, so talk it through with the agency and the health professionals involved.

Can it be arranged for a short time?

Often, yes. Some families use it after a hospital stay or during a period of illness, then reduce it as things improve.
